Need for speed will send doctors to the cloud, experts say

“The Cloud” presents one of the most difficult security challenges for any entity, but particularly so for anybody in healthcare. The risks of violating one or more HIPAA privacy mandates and the associated penalties make for a huge downside risk when storing PHI in/on “the cloud”.
Cloud service purveyors will have to guarantee security to an extreme degree, and assume the corresponding liability for any PHI breeches, both for any penalties assessed against them directly and those against the owner of the PHI.
It seems like this risk alone would cause health care providers to be late adopters rather than bleeding edge users of cloud services for senstivie data.
