Small physician practices to find advice on MU2 in HIMSS13 Workshop

February 7, 2013 in Medical Technology

Physicians from small practices will find an in-depth study of meaningful use Stage 2 requirements at a workshop to be held March 2, from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the pre-2013 HIMSS Annual Conference Exhibition.

According to HIMSS officials, HIMSS13 workshops are designed for attendees “to actively participate in a highly collaborative environment.”

This workshop, titled “Meaningful Use: Addressing the New Requirements of the EHR Incentive Program for Small Ambulatory Practices,” will be taught by Paul Kleeberg, MD, the chief medical informatics officer (CMIO) for Stratis Health, a Bloomington, Minn.-based, nonprofit organization that leads collaboration and innovation in healthcare quality and safety.

Kleeberg is the president of The Itinerant CMIO, LLC, a consulting firm that focuses on assisting small hospitals and clinics in effectively using EHRs, and he is also the clinical director for the Regional Extension Assistance Center for HIT (REACH), one of 62 federal regional extension centers funded by the Office of National Coordinator (ONC) to assist small hospitals and primary care providers to adopt and become meaningful users of electronic health records.

Kleeberg claims more than 19 years of experience working in health information technology, implementing EHR systems and improving processes for electronic work flow to enhance care delivery.  He also has over 17 years experience in medical practice, having worked in private practice as a rural family physician providing comprehensive ambulatory, emergency, and hospital care; and as an ambulatory physician in Allina’s large integrated delivery system.

According to Kleeberg, he has used paper medical records, and has experienced the transition from paper to electronic, the transition from one EHR to another in his practice and the power that EHRs have in improving patient care.

Kleeberg says he is passionate about using information technology to support quality care.

Attendees of the workshop should learn how to identify the changes to meaningful use brought about by the Stage 2 rules; initiate changes in their practices that will prepare them to become meaningful users; create a plan with their staff as to how to approach the requirements of the new rules; and implement the new EHR requirements to improve patient care and their bottom line.

The workshop will be held in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Room 260.
