CMS Seeks To Recoup Improper PQRS, E-Rx Incentive Payments

March 17, 2014 in News

CMS plans to launch a four-year initiative aimed at recovering improper payments made through its Physician Quality Reporting System and Electronic Prescribing incentive programs, according to a notice published Monday in the Federal Register, Health Data Management reports.

According to the notice, CMS will survey 400:

  • Group practices;
  • Registries; and
  • Data submission vendors (Goedert, Health Data Management, 3/14).

CMS will use the survey to analyze how the systems:

  • Handle data;
  • Meet program requirements; and
  • Specify clinical quality measures.

It will attempt to identify:

  • Gaps;
  • Inconsistencies; and
  • Potential erroneous payments in PQRS and the e-prescribing programs.

CMS also will use its findings to avoid future issues related to data integrity, according to Clinical Innovation Technology (Pedulli, Clinical Innovation Technology, 3/17).

The notice will be open for public comment for 60 days (Hall, FierceHealthIT, 3/17).
