The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and the National Association of County and City Health Officials have published a new toolkit designed to improve public health agencies’ understanding and use of health information exchanges, Health IT Analytics reports (Bresnick, Health IT Analytics, 7/2).
The toolkit includes information on:
- What HIE services are and what types of organizations offer data exchange;
- How a health agency can use or support HIE services; and
- How to determine whether participating in an HIE will be a worthwhile endeavor (Goth, Health Data Management, 7/3).
Uses for Public Health Agencies
Seth Foldy, author of the materials in the toolkit, said that the packet “acknowledges current flux in HIE technology and business models, and is designed to help health departments make sensible business decisions over time.”
In addition, Roland Gamache, senior director of informatics at NACCHO, said the toolkit “will allow local health departments to automatically receive and analyze electronic health data to identify diseases that affect our communities, and it will enable local health departments to improve public health surveillance and response to those diseases” (HIMSS release, 6/30).
