RWJU Hospital goes to single platform

December 1, 2014 in Medical Technology

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital leaders have launched an initiative to create a single electronic health record platform. The hospital will extend and expand its Allscripts technology throughout its facilities.

The technology Includes Allscripts Sunrise and Allscripts TouchWorks.

RWJUH extended its commitment to Allscripts Sunrise as its core EHR until 2020, and it will expand its use of Allscripts Sunrise clinical solutions for its newly acquired facility, RWJ Somerset, in Somerville, N.J. Also, the organization selected Allscripts TouchWorks to support care and patient management efforts for Robert Wood Johnson for its physician network.

“We believe this is a tremendous opportunity for our organization to utilize a high-performing EHR to create a single, patient record platform,” said Bob Irwin, CIO of RWJUH, in announcing the move. “This integrated record combined with the power of (the two platforms) will continue to help us deliver our mission to promote health and well-being for the patients and communities we serve.”

Allscripts TouchWorks EHR will be deployed to support the organization’s clinical and population health goals. The network of physicians based in Central New Jersey serves patients in core specialties in family medicine, internal medicine, OB/GYN, cardiology and urgent care.

Allscripts Sunrise provides computerized provider order entry and features including integrated pharmacy and bar-coded medication administration.

Allscripts TouchWorks is a customizable solution with an open architecture. Allscripts TouchWorks offers automated clinical decision support at the point-of-care, a configurable clinical desktop, and nearly 800 peer-reviewed Care Guides.

RWJUH will also expand its use of Allscripts EPSi, Allscripts Patient Flow and Allscripts Hosting Solutions at all of its facilities. Allscripts EPSi solution features analytics, budgeting and knowledge-based decision support functionality that helps organizations facilitate financial management strategic planning, product line budgeting, cost accounting and operational and capital budgeting to help plan for and address the financial challenges facing healthcare organizations.

RWJUH has campuses in New Brunswick, Rahway, Hamilton and Somerville, N.J. RWJUH’s New Brunswick and Somerset campuses serve as the flagship hospital of Robert Wood Johnson Health System, a health system with $1.5 billion dollars in revenue, more than 10,100 employees, 3,250 medical staff members and 1,733 beds.

“Tighter integration of clinicians via a common record with a single vendor is an important goal for RWJUH,” Irwin added. “We have had tremendous success with Allscripts Sunrise and intend to leverage this experience with the implementation of Allscripts TouchWorks. These solutions will support our efforts to create an environment of excellence with the highest quality, evidence-based patient care.”

“We are pleased that RWJUH has renewed and expanded its partnership with Allscripts,” Paul M. Black, president and CEO of Allscripts, said in a press statement. “We are committed to aligning with RWJUH’s efforts to create a single, highly functioning EHR platform and supporting RWJUH’s important mission to improve outcomes for patients and communities in Central New Jersey.”
