Survey: Many Providers Use EHRs for Data Analytics Capabilities

May 27, 2015 in News

Many health care organizations are using electronic health record systems to support their data analytics capabilities, according to a survey by HIMSS Analytics, Health Data Management reports.

Survey Details

For the survey, researchers reviewed the HIMSS Analytics data warehouse and polled 189 health care organization officials, the majority of whom were director- or C-suite-level executives.

Results were compared with a similar 2013 study that also measured the provider analytics field (Goedert, Health Data Management, 5/27).

Survey Findings

Overall, the survey found that health care organizations’ adoption of clinical and business intelligence solutions increased by six percentage points between 2013 and 2015, from 46% to 52% (Pittman/Weaver, “Morning eHealth,” Politico, 5/27).

HIMSS Analytics Research Director Brendan FitzGerald said that while the increase was not particularly large, it showed that investments in such tools will increase as providers see the need for analytics (Health Data Management, 5/27).

Of those 52% who have adopted clinical and business intelligence solutions, 54% said they use their EHR for analytics (“Morning eHealth,” Politico, 5/27).

However, many providers said they still were not ready to adopt such technology, according to the survey. Meanwhile, 51% of respondents said they were unsure about future plans to invest in clinical and business intelligence tools (Health Data Management, 5/27).

In addition, the survey found the health care organizations’ focus changed from accountable care to population health during the two-year period (“Morning eHealth,” Politico, 5/27).
